ASTM A178 Resistance Welded Steel Tube For High Application 1-12m Length 0

Electric-Resistance-Welded (ERW) Tubes are key welded steel products manufactured via the electric resistance welding process. In this process, flat steel strips or coils are formed into cylindrical shapes, and their edges are fused using high-frequency electrical resistance heat without adding filler metal. ERW tubes offer advantages such as high production efficiency, stable dimensional accuracy, and cost-effectiveness, making them widely used in the energy, industrial, construction, and other sectors.
Their materials are mainly classified into carbon steel, carbon-manganese steel, and austenitic stainless steel. Carbon steel, with a carbon content of ≤0.25%, exhibits good weldability and ductility while being economical, suitable for general fluid transportation and low-load structural components. Carbon-manganese steel, containing 1.00–1.60% manganese, has superior high-temperature strength and creep resistance, and is used for boiler tubes and medium-temperature superheater tubes. Austenitic stainless steel, with chromium content ≥16% and nickel content ≥8%, features excellent corrosion resistance and high-temperature stability, making it applicable to corrosive environments such as chemical and marine industries, as well as high-temperature heat exchangers.
In terms of specifications, ERW tubes comply with international and industry standards including ASTM A178/A178M, ASTM A249/A249M, and API 5L, which cover dimensions, manufacturing processes, and other aspects. Typically, their outside diameter ranges from 0.5 inches (12.7 mm) to 24 inches (609.6 mm), and wall thickness ranges from 0.015 inches (0.4 mm) to 0.5 inches (12.7 mm). For length, both random lengths (16–24 feet / 4.9–7.3 meters) and fixed lengths (customizable) are available, and small-diameter tubes can also be supplied in coils.
Chemical compositions vary by material grade; for example, carbon steel Grade A under ASTM A178/A178M contains 0.06–0.18% carbon and 0.27–0.63% manganese. Mechanical properties also differ among grades: carbon-manganese steel Grade D under the same standard has a minimum tensile strength of 70 ksi (485 MPa), a minimum yield strength of 40 ksi (275 MPa), and a minimum elongation of 30%.
In terms of applications, ERW tubes are used in boilers, superheaters, and oil-gas transportation in the energy and power sector; in heat exchangers and mechanical structures in industrial manufacturing; as structural supports and municipal pipelines in the construction and infrastructure field; and they also find applications in specialized fields such as nuclear power, military industry, and medical and food industries.
